To enhance the research culture in the University, four representatives from the School of Education, Arts, and Sciences (SEAS) presented their studies during the 2016 International Conference on Research and Education held at Gerard Decaestecker Building Function Hall, Saint Louis University (SLU), Baguio City last Dec. 15-18, 2016.

With the theme, “Quantitative and Action Researchers: A Closer Look in Improving Classroom Learning,” the said conference aimed to update educational researchers, administrators, teachers, and pre-service teachers on the trends in conducting quantitative and action research; to discuss inputs on how to conduct quantitative and action research that will have great impact in improving classroom learning; and to write and to present sample quantitative and action research outputs conducted by teachers and educators.

Dr. Therese May G. Alejandrino, SEAS Academic Dean, presented her dissertation entitled, Higher Education Institutions’ Implementation of Outcomes-Based Education and the Relevant Training Programs and Academic Structures for its Holistic Implementation, examined the extent of implementation of Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) along Spady’s principles and the relevant training programs and academic structures for its holistic implementation. Specifically, it reviewed institutional learning outcomes (ILOs), program objectives (POs), program learning outcomes (PLOs) of the CICM (Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) schools and how those are attained through OBE. Frameworks for the training programs and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) mechanisms for sustained OBE implementation, and an OBE-based Teaching and Learning checklist were also developed.Mr. Darin Jan C. Tindowen, Research Associate of the University Research Center (URC) and SEAS Faculty, and Ms. Ednalyn M. Quinagoran, BEEd IV, presented their study entitled, Pupils’ Academic Self-Concept and their Achievement in Mathematics. The study examined the relationship of academic self-concept and academic achievement in Mathematics of 41 Grade VI pupils of a public elementary school in Iguig, Cagayan.

Finally, Mr. Tindowen and Ms. Abigael P. Unarce, BEEd IV, shared their study entitled, Spelling Proficiency, Reading Comprehension, and Reading Fluency of Elementary Education Students. Respondents of the study were the third year Bachelor of Elementary Education students of a higher education institution in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

The conference was organized by the School of Teacher Education of SLU, one of the centers of excellence in Teacher Education in the country. It was also endorsed and supported by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Education (DepEd).
