The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) and in collaboration with the University of Saint Louis, held the training on Basic Research Methods (BRM) for Batanes and Cagayan on July 3-5, 2019.
The activity was the final training on BRM relevant to health researches and capacity-building and mentoring activities of the CVHRDC for the fiscal year 2019.
During the three-day event, 60 select professionals from high schools, colleges, state universities, private universities, and regional line agencies participated in coming up with research proposals.
In his welcome remarks, Rev. Fr. Renillo H. Sta. Ana, CICM, University president, emphasized that research is religiously conducted to constantly uplift knowledge and skills. He also said that research aims for knowledge and truth as well as mission and excellence.
The training on BRM was facilitated by three trainers and researchers from the region, namely: (1) Dr. Julius T. Capili, CVHRDC executive director and dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences, Cagayan State University (CSU) – Andrews Campus; (2) Dr. Melfei E. Bungihan, CVHRDC Research Management Committee (RMC) and Technical Review Board (TRB) chair and faculty at Quirino State University; and (3) Professor Hilaria M. Barsabal, biostatistician of CSU Andrews Campus.
The first day focused on the overview of the research process, the research problem, and theoretical and empirical bases. Initial workshop and presentation of outputs followed.
Discussions on the second day revolved around epidemiologic and experimental studies, sampling designs with sample size determination, qualitative research, and appropriate data collection procedure. The workshop was continued.
The third day of the training gave emphasis on data analysis, ethics in health research, administrative aspects in research, and data analysis plan.
As the three-day training culminated, there were 11 research proposals presented. Such proposals shall be enhanced and completed by the researchers then submitted to the CVHRDC TRB for evaluation and recommendation for possible funding of the DOST and the Department of Health – Cagayan Valley Center for Health Development (DOH-CVCHD).
