USL facilitates MOOC anew, supports ‘beyond classroom learning’

Through the English Language Programs of the Cultural Affairs Office, Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy, Manila, the University of Saint Louis (USL) was once again tapped to host another massive open online course in the Cagayan Valley region.

Seventy-three (73) teachers in the region completed the course, “Professional Development for Teacher Trainers,” delivered by Arizona State University, USA, and designed for the American English (AE) E-Teacher Program. The AE E-Teacher Program is a program of the United States Department of State and FHI360.
The five-week long online course (from October 18 to November 19, 2018), blended with four meet-ups, had the main objective to develop teachers’ ability to implement training.

Learning sessions were anchored on the following topics: Transforming from Teacher to Trainer; Training Needs Analysis: Tools and Techniques; Creating a Training Course Outline; and, Training Course Evaluation.

With USL’s commitment to extend learning opportunities to schools in the region, the course was completed by teachers and trainers from the following schools and agencies:

USL was the host camp for the MOOC. However, Learning Action Cells (LACs) were also organized in Saint Mary’s University, with Ms. Pearl Coballes as the LAC leader, and the University of La Salette, with Dr. Jose Sabaulan as the LAC leader.

Dr. Therese May G. Alejandrino, dean of USL’s School of Education, Arts, Sciences, and Health was the overall online course facilitator in the region. Dr. Alejandrino had undergone the “MOOC Camp Leadership Training Program” sponsored by the US Embassy Manila.

The US Embassy will give advice on the date for the “Celebration of Learning” or the completers’ graduation rites.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alejandrino affirms the use of the NEO learning management system, an online learning platform in USL, in relation to MOOCs.

“USL’s implementation of an online learning management system (LMS) is strengthened by the training obtained by its faculty to complete courses through online and blended learning platforms,” Dr. Alejandrino said.
