BSMT/BSMLS students see beyond boundaries in student-exchange program in Thailand

Twelve third-year Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (BSMT)/ Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) students from the University of Saint Louis (USL) took in new perspectives and gained supplemental experience and knowledge during their international student exchange program at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (HCU) in Samut Prakan Province, Thailand.

The exchange program, held on July 3-31, 2023, allowed the students to enhance their practical knowledge, laboratory skills, and work values in a multicultural environment, as well as promote their global competitiveness and provide significant education for them to share their learnings with their fellow students back home. They also experienced the lifestyle of Samut Prakan Province and gained invaluable insights into Thai culture.

The participants collectively shared their experience and insights, emphasizing the importance of their exposure to Thailand’s advancements, which broadened their knowledge and provided them with valuable perspectives on laboratory medicine practices and their exposure to a different culture, fostering cross-cultural understanding, collaboration, and professional growth.

“This cultural excursion allowed the students to immerse themselves in Thailand’s rich history and architectural heritage. By visiting these ancient temples, such as those in the Historical City of Ayutthaya, the students gained a deeper appreciation for Thai culture, spirituality, and artistry. They learned about the religious practices, symbolism, and historical significance associated with these temples, providing a broader understanding of Thailand’s cultural context. This exposure to historical landmarks complemented their professional learning experiences and further enriched their overall cultural exchange program,” shared Mr. Alvin A. Aldea, BSMT/MLS Program Chair.

Over the course of one month, the USL delegation, led by Mr. Alvin A. Aldea, together with the students, namely, Jenn Jeybel P. Aguinaldo, Princess C. Atuan, Ma. Erika Hannah S. Corpuz, Kristel Joy P. Malana, Verone Aira T. Pananggui, Cirilo M. Parallag III, Jenielyn M. Pastor, Wyreen Ryan A. Putulan, Reyshelle Mae C. Sagun, Sunshine Nelda Grace A. Sevilla, Ritz-Joi S. Tamang, and Aliyah Chloe G. Tumaneng, embraced the new learnings and friendships they gained during their stay.

From research to collaborative discussions to immersion experiences in different healthcare settings, USL students shine through their dedication to a global perspective. Congratulations to the students for their achievements and to the host university for fostering such a valuable experience.
